Spirulina and phycocyanin, the health benefits – Xelliss

spirulina-phycocyanin-xelliss

In this article, I will talk about spirulina and phycocyanin, more precisely about their health benefits, because indeed, spirulina and especially its extract, phycocyanin which is also called "blue gold", deserve to be known.

Speaking of benefits, we could practically say that those of spirulina and phycocyanin are unlimited. Incidentally, to support this statement, the World Health Organization (WHO) has recognized spirulina as the best food of the 21st century thanks to its extraordinary nutritional properties.  Moreover, UNESCO affirms that spirulina is "the ideal and most complete food of tomorrow". For its part, the FDA (Food and Drug Administration in the United States) mentions that spirulina is one of the best sources of protein.

In short, spirulina has the most complete nutritional composition of all plants and animal sources. We could go further and say without being too wrong that spirulina is the most complete and powerful food present on the planet Earth since it has been present for several million years and that it has the most complete nutritional composition of all foods, whether they are from plant or animal sources. Imagine then all the benefits you could have for your physical and mental health (yes, even at the mental level!) by consuming a high quality spirulina every day...

As far as I am concerned, spirulina and its extract phycocyanin have literally changed my life and solved many health problems that I had for a long time (fatigue and chronic pain among others) and there are many other testimonies that go in this direction, not to mention all the other testimonies that touch on different diseases or conditions, let's think of autism to name but one. It is for this reason that I have chosen to share my experience with what has made a real difference in my life. Spirulina is much more than a superfood! It is the ultimate food that everyone needs in their lives! However, to benefit from its optimal performance, the only precaution to take before consuming it is to choose it very wisely.

Indeed, as we live in a toxic environment at several levels, both in terms of air, water and land and that spirulina has the ability to easily capture everything around it, it is important to ensure that it is grown in the best possible conditions to avoid contamination. (At the end of this article, you will find the name of the company that produces one of the only spirulina in the world that is free of any contaminants or heavy metals, because it is grown in photobioreactors, a completely closed and protected system that guarantees a spirulina of great purity.

Enjoy the discovery of spirulina!

The benefits of spirulina and sport

  • Improved endurance and stamina

Spirulina is very popular with athletes and is widely used by runners, cyclists and bodybuilders to improve recovery and promote better muscle building. Studies conducted with several groups of athletes clearly show that spirulina improves both endurance and recovery and reduces physical fatigue.  Consuming spirulina also improves the elimination of lactic acid that causes cramps and muscle pain.

  • Helps to stay in shape or get back in shape

Spirulina is composed of 60 to 70 proteins containing all the essential amino acids. It also contains 19% carbohydrates, 6% lipids and a high concentration of minerals. It is also rich in dietary fiber, beta-carotene, minerals (magnesium, calcium, phosphorus and potassium), B vitamins and omega 3, 6 and 9 fatty acids. Spirulina therefore provides a large dose of energy on a daily basis.

  • Spirulina and bodybuilding

Spirulina helps build muscle, relieves muscle soreness and improves blood quality and circulation. Consumption of spirulina is also good for bodybuilding as it helps to rapidly expel lactic acid and promotes recovery after training. Spirulina also acts as a powerful natural anti-inflammatory. Therefore, it helps relieve pain caused by prolonged or intense exercise as well as all kinds of inflammatory pain.

The different components of spirulina

  • Excellent source of protein

Spirulina is one of the most protein-rich foods in the plant kingdom. On average, 55 to 70% of its total weight is made up of amino acids. The muscles use these amino acids as a source of energy. For your information, red meat contains only 20% protein and this percentage is reduced by cooking. Spirulina is therefore a superfood for vegetarians and vegans because although many plants contain proteins, they are not always complete. In fact, not all plants contain all the essential amino acids. As for Spirulina, it has 9 essential amino acids in its composition.

  • Minerals and trace elements

Spirulina contains interesting quantities of minerals such as iron, copper, magnesium and zinc which are known to fight fatigue and promote recovery. It is also rich in sodium, phosphorus, potassium, selenium and manganese. All these minerals and trace elements are very useful for the overall health of our body.

  • Phycocyanine and chlorophyll

Phycocyanin is a rare pigment in nature. However, it is present in large quantities in spirulina. Moreover, this blue colored molecule is intended for medical use as a replacement for certain pharmaceutical treatments in some countries. It is particularly bioavailable and a powerful antioxidant that strengthens the body and protects the cells. Sportsmen appreciate phycocyanine for its many virtues, as it has properties to detoxify the body, produce white and red blood cells and improve physical performance.

The green color of spirulina comes from the chlorophyll. The chlorophyll core gathers and attracts toxic elements, giving spirulina very useful properties when it comes to detoxifying the blood. It is also this pigment that promotes the production of red blood cells in the body. Chlorophyll is therefore a plant molecule that is beneficial to our health.

  • Vitamin B12 - Natural and vegetable source

Vitamin B derivatives are found in large quantities in spirulina, including riboflavin (vitamin B2), nicotinamide (vitamin B3), pyridoxine (vitamin B6) and folic acid (vitamin B9). In addition, spirulina is one of the few plant foods to contain vitamin B12. This makes vegetarians or vegans happy because it is generally present in red meat and it is not present in plants.

The consumption of spirulina and dosage

Spirulina can be consumed on a regular basis in order to benefit from all its advantages. When you start taking spirulina, it is always better to opt for a progressive consumption. Many people start taking spirulina with 1 to 2 grams of spirulina per day or 1 to 2 ml if you take spirulina/phycocyanin in liquid form for the first week. Then you can increase the dosage gradually. The average dose is usually 3-5 grams per day or 3-5 ml for the liquid form. Some people whose needs are more important can consume up to 10 grams / ml of spirulina per day, this is the case of athletes among others. Do not hesitate to seek advice from a health specialist to adapt the dosage to your own nutritional needs according to your condition.

Where to get spirulina free of contaminants and heavy metals

As mentioned previously, spirulina has a "default" (which is a quality for the body), it easily captures the different contaminants present in its environment such as heavy metals present in the water as well as other types of parasites or harmful elements. In this regard, it should be noted that even the organic label does not guarantee the purity and absence of contaminants in Spirulina because growing in natural environments or in ponds that are exposed to different elements of nature makes it very difficult to control the growing conditions and exposes the Spirulina to different sources of contaminants. The way Spirulina is grown obviously affects its quality and effectiveness. Thus, there is of course a health risk in consuming spirulina grown in an open or natural environment. This is why it is very important to know where the spirulina you buy comes from, how it is grown, in order to avoid unpleasant surprises.

The solution to this problem is the cultivation of spirulina in a closed environment that allows absolute control of the cultivation process. This way of cultivating spirulina guarantees a very high quality spirulina, i.e. an absence of contaminants and pathogens, a guaranteed purity and a high quality spirulina with exceptional nutritional benefits.

Xelliss, a Spirulina grown in a closed environment

Xelliss is a company that cultivates spirulina in a closed environment in modular photobioreactors (technology patented by Xelliss). Xelliss is at the origin of the development of the modular photobioreactor technology and they are the only ones in the world to cultivate spirulina in this type of closed environment. As you can see on the picture, the controlled ponds have been specially designed for the cultivation of algae in a closed environment. Their modular photobioreactor system is a closed circuit because it is installed in a secure building that meets very demanding sanitary standards, and because they control the different steps of the microalgae culture. In this way, they obtain an optimal spirulina of guaranteed quality (no added chemical ingredients, no parasites, no heat treatment, no solvent, no heavy metals, etc.). This is indeed a 100% European production from a company that won CV Magazine's 2019 Energy Innovator Award as "Best Manufacturer of Industrial Algae Production Systems".

Xelliss microalgae are grown in closed photobioreactors that maintain nutritional value and prevent contamination. Scientists refine this process at every step. The fresh mountain water surrounding their facility is chlorine-free and is filtered through reverse osmosis, ensuring that the microalgae are not exposed to chemicals, microbes or waterborne contamination. By carefully cultivating their own microalgae, they can control every aspect, from growth to packaging and delivery. This ensures product safety and microbial quality and avoids the deterioration of nutritional quality associated with storage, oxidation, contamination, exposure to harmful light or transportation of materials. Xelliss is therefore able to obtain and offer a very high quality spirulina, with exceptional and unique nutritional benefits on the market, throughout the year, thanks to the automated management of the four variable parameters they have control over: CO2, air temperature, nutrients, and lighting.

Xelliss phycocyanin

Xelliss uses its own spirulina for its phycocyanin production. Indeed, the conditions of culture in photobioreactors have allowed to optimize the richness of this precious active ingredient and to reach maximum concentrations. Xelliss then applies a unique natural process called EPNA (Extraction Phyco Native Active) to extract phycocyanin from freshly grown A3 Spirulina. This process uses a centrifuge and an extractor to obtain the aqueous concentrate from the photobioreactor. This extraction is done immediately, on site, to preserve the phycocyanin rich quality. EPNA is a water-based process, with no solvents or chemicals. No heat or drying that could alter the microalgae is used. The result of this process is a product, the phycocyanin / spirulina in liquid form of great purity and effectiveness.

PhycoSci X20 / NaturaBlue is the product that I take daily and with which I obtain great benefits.
